Preview: Merry Opera – Die Fledermaus

On Friday 21 March, Merry Opera is putting on a production of Die Fledermaus, a timeless operetta brimming with irresistible melodies, sharp humour, and vivid characters.

Set against the backdrop of a 1920s world caught between post-war excess and fading Edwardian morality, this production captures the essence of its enduring appeal. The story’s farcical plot, filled with playful mischief and flirtations, cleverly explores timeless themes of love, infidelity, and self-renewal. With a perfect balance of wit, charm, and sophisticated satire, Die Fledermaus offers a joyful escape into a world of indulgence, where societal masks are worn, yet the audience returns to reality, refreshed and entertained.

Audience comments

“A wonderful production done with style, verve and good comic acting. I was blown away by the quality of the singing. A witty translation performed with energy and panache. Very enjoyable and highly recommended.”

“Top-quality singing and acting from the entire cast, superb keyboard and some great humour.”

“Every detail had been carefully crafted and everything, the piano music, the voices, the acting , the choreography, the lighting, the stage set (and its changes,) all of it fitted perfectly together. Less is more! With little means you have created a masterpiece.”

Why on earth would you want to see an opera?

Opera can be monumentally dull; we’ve fallen asleep in many a traditional performance. So in 2007 we set out to show people how opera, sung in a language you can understand, with words you can hear clearly and in which the singers convince the audience, really does thrill with its drama, delight with its comedy and tug at the heartstrings.
