Vivaldi’s Gloria has become one of the best-loved of all baroque choral works. Energetic, rhythmic choral movements alternate with reflective sections and tuneful solos, accompanied by the bright colours of strings, oboes and trumpet.
Haydn’s ‘Creation’ Mass of 1801 (named after a short quotation in it from The Creation) is a classic of the choral repertoire, but it has never been performed at the Festival. It’s music that fully lives up to Haydn’s comment, ‘When I think of my God, my heart dances within me for joy, and then my music has to dance, too.’
